Get info about Lackawanna College geriatric nursing, registering in a technical training program, and taking free practice tests online. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the population ages, medical care will continue to expand. If you complete the geriatric nursing program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you such as clinical internships, nursing management, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of geriatric nursing program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained geriatric nurses, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Lackawanna College.

To become a Registered Nurse (RN), you will be required to take courses in medical terminology, patient care and life sciences. Although associate degree programs provide students with adequate nursing training, the nurse anesthetist program provides greater clinical exposure and a stronger general education. A 4-year BSN program allows students to study specialized areas of nursing, including geriatric nursing and mental health counseling. An RN has to cope with more responsibility, and must oversee the work of LPNs and CNAs under their supervision. Job openings in geriatric nursing are projected to grow 25% over the coming decade. The average salary for nurses with an associates degree was $43,700 in 2015, while geriatric nurses with a bachelors degree earned $67,490 per year.

Certification requirements include board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The license period for the nurse anesthetist program varies by individual state, but is usually valid for either two or three years. Registered nurses (RNs) are not required to be certified in a particular specialty by state law. For example, it isn't necessary to be a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) to work on a hospital geriatric nursing floor, and most MedSurg nurses are not CMSRNs. There are a fixed number of credits that each state requires, and if you work in a hospital facility, an accelerated BSN program may be offered on-site.

Paramedic Programs

EMTs and paramedics work both indoors and out, and in all types of weather. In general, there's a high risk for contracting illnesses or experiencing work-related injuries. In addition, EMTs and paramedics may be exposed to communicable diseases, such as hepatitis-B and AIDS, as well as to violence from mentally unstable or combative patients. The work is not only physically strenuous but can be stressful, nvolving life-or-death situations. Many EMTs and paramedics are required to work more than 40 hours a week, and because emergency services function 24 hours a day, EMTs and paramedics may have highly irregular working hours.

The job prospects for paramedics and emergency medical technicians are good, particularly in larger cities. EMTs and paramedics who have advanced education and certification enjoy the best job prospects. Growth in employment opportunities for paramedics is largely due to increased call volumes of medical emergencies. In addition, the time that EMTs and paramedics spend with each patient is increasing. As a result, when an ambulance arrives, it takes longer to transfer the patient from the care of paramedics to the staff of the hospital's emergency room. Some EMTs and paramedics become instructors, dispatchers, or physician assistants.
