Learn about SCSU geriatric nursing, registering in a technical degree program, and taking free tests online. You can enter nursing with either an associates degree or BSN. As a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), you may provide patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). If you complete the geriatric nursing program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you such as clinical internships, nursing management, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of geriatric nursing program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained geriatric nurses, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for SCSU.
To become a Registered Nurse (RN), you will be required to take courses in medical terminology, patient care and life sciences. Although associate degree programs provide students with adequate nursing training, the nurse anesthetist program provides greater clinical exposure and a stronger general education. A 4-year BSN program allows students to study specialized areas of nursing, including geriatric nursing and mental health counseling. An RN has to cope with more responsibility, and must oversee the work of LPNs and CNAs under their supervision. Job openings in geriatric nursing are projected to grow 25% over the coming decade. The average salary for nurses with an associates degree was $43,700 in 2015, while geriatric nurses with a bachelors degree earned $67,490 per year.
Certification requirements include board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The license period for the nurse anesthetist program varies by individual state, but is usually valid for either two or three years. Registered nurses (RNs) are not required to be certified in a particular specialty by state law. For example, it isn't necessary to be a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) to work on a hospital geriatric nursing floor, and most MedSurg nurses are not CMSRNs. There are a fixed number of credits that each state requires, and if you work in a hospital facility, an accelerated BSN program may be offered on-site.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
CyberKnife radiosurgery is a robotic surgery device that uses a linear accelerator mounted on a computer-controlled robotic arm to treat tumors throughout the body that are often unreachable by conventional surgery. The CyberKnife uses image-guided robotics to destroy tumors and other lesions with multiple beams of high-energy radiation. The cumulative effect of all the beams at the target results in the lesion receiving a very high dose of radiation while nearby normal tissue is preserved. Cyberknife radiosurgery is sufficiently precise to match the shape of small, complex tumors located in critical structures.
The CyberKnife System, designed by Accuray, combines two advanced technologies to deliver a revolutionary, frameless radiosurgery. The first innovation is a lightweight linear accelerator mounted on a multi-jointed robotic arm. This flexible robotic arm provides access to unreachable tumors and helps reduce harm to critical structures surrounding the lesion such as vital organs and tissues. The second innovation is an image guidance system. This can compensate for patient movement, and allow radiation to be delivered without using rigid immobilization, such as a head frame.
